Complex conjunctives and their impact on cohesion and coherence in upper-secondary students' semi-formal essays
Kloučková, Julie ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor) ; Nádraská, Zuzana (referee)
The thesis aims to explore the usage of complex conjunctives in upper-secondary students' semi-formal essays. It deals with written discourse produced by two groups of students of B1 and B2 (CEFR) levels, uncovers the differences in their use, explores their impact on cohesion and coherence and looks at the students' understanding of these concepts. In total, 40 essays in two B1 and B2 subcorpora are analysed through a corpus analysis tool inspired by the framework of Halliday and Hasan. Prior to that, analyses of writing sections in three students' books from the perspective of Teachability Hypothesis and Processability Model are conducted to establish the potential frequency and conjunctive type scale. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses showed that upper-intermediate students employ more complex conjunctives than intermediate students, even though the difference is not substantial. The data also indicate that both groups prefer initial sentence placements to the medial positions, and that additives are used over adversatives. Furthermore, the analyses uncovered surprising results, for example, in the area of paragraph-initially and paragraph- internally used conjunctives. The research shows that complex conjunctives are essential in semi-formal and formal writings and that especially...

The Representational Variant of the Force Concept Inventory
Paclt, Jan ; Mandíková, Dana (advisor) ; Snětinová, Marie (referee)
The goal of this bachelor thesis was to translate the Representative variant of the force concept inventory test (R-FCI), which is used to diagnose preconceptions about force and motion of secondary school pupils, into Czech. In addition, the test was conducted in several classes at various czech secondary schools and was also given to the students of physics with specialization in education at the Faculty of mathematics and physics, Charles university in Prague. The participants were given the test before and after the basics of newtonian mechanics were discussed in class. The results of the survey were processed and used to discuss pupils'misconceptions and the success of their suppression as a result of teaching. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the R-FCI test and the way the survey results are processed. The second part presents and interprets the results of individual groups in which the test was conducted. The third part consists of discussion of the most frequent pupils' misconceptions and of the success of their identification using the R-FCI test. Finally, the results of the survey are compared with the research conducted by P. Nieminen, A. Savinainen and J. Viiri in 2010.

The speech of younger generation in Frýdek-Místek
Janáková, Bára ; Chromý, Jan (advisor) ; Dittmann, Robert (referee)
This thesis presents an analysis of the casual speech of high school students in Frýdek-Místek. Use of dialectal features which should be typical both for the area of Frýdek-Místek and for the broader Moravian and Silesian area was analyzed. Thus, we wanted to document the impact of dialect levelling in the speech of younger generation. Data were gathered using sociolinguistic interviews. The sample was very homogeneous and it was designed to represent a specific category of speakers, i.e. high-school students. Mostly, the interdialectal variants were preferred over dialectal ones. One of the features which is still commonly used is the pronunciation of -mě- as [mje].
Academic self-efficacy of high school students
Draberová, Jana ; Morávková Krejčová, Lenka (advisor) ; Gillernová, Ilona (referee)
The concept of academic self-efficacy, which refers to Albert`Bandura`s self-efficacy theory, is an important factor in students` academic achievement. In this thesis we attempted to develop a research tool for assessing academic self-efficacy. The theoretical part focuses on general definition of self-efficacy and specific characteristics of perceived academic self-efficacy. The empirical part deals with the development of the questionnaire, with verification of its psychometric characteristics and determines its validity. The questionnaire was tested on a research sample of 611 students of five Prague secondary schools, aged 15 - 19. The findings indicate that the developed assessment tool is reliable, has good psychometric qualities and satisfactory validity, and is applicable in school practice. The research has also revealed interesting relations between academic self-efficacy and other variables such as gender, age or demanding school situations experienced by student.
